Bar-VIPS - radiopaque means. Due to its pronounced adhesive properties, it envelops the mucous membrane of the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) and provides a clear image of the mucosal microrelief. Characterized by low toxicity.

Composition

Barium sulfate + auxiliary substances.

Pharmacokinetics

It is not absorbed from the digestive tract. Completely eliminated from the body after 24-48 hours.

Indications

  • X-ray examination of the esophagus, stomach and intestines (including the method of double contrasting).

Forms of release

Powder for suspension for oral administration 100 g and 240 g.

Instructions for use and dosing regimen

Bar-VIPS is administered orally or rectally. The suspension is prepared by gradually diluting the entire amount of powder 240 g in 60-80 ml of boiled water with continuous stirring for 3 minutes (the volume of the resulting suspension is 120 ml). The amount of suspension taken depends on the method of investigation and ranges from 15-20 to 80-100 ml.

To study the colon by the method of retrograde double contrasting, 720 g of powder is diluted in 300 ml of water. The resulting suspension is administered rectally.

Side effect

  • barium appendicitis;
  • constipation;
  • when using gas-forming substances in the process of double contrasting - unpleasant sensations in the epigastric region;
  • allergic reactions.

Contraindications

  • perforation of the gastrointestinal wall or suspicion of it;
  • esophagotracheal fistulas;
  • impaired swallowing;
  • intestinal obstruction;
  • constipation;
  • stenosis of the esophagus;
  • bleeding from the intestine;
  • pregnancy;
  • condition after surgical interventions on the organs of the digestive tract;
  • malabsorption syndrome;
  • food allergy;
  • hypersensitivity to barium sulfate.

Application in pregnancy and lactation

The use of Bar-VIPS is not recommended during pregnancy, except when the expected benefit to the mother exceeds the potential risk to the fetus.

During the period of lactation, there are no restrictions on the application.

Use in children

Bar-VIPS is not recommended for children.

In the case of double contrasting in older children (in young children, doublecontrasting is impractical) immediately before the study, the patient is given, depending on the age, 1.5-3.5 g of baking soda (in solution or powder), which is quickly washed down with a solution of 1-3 g of citric acid. The total volume of distilled water should not exceed 7-15 ml.

Barium sulfate can be used to study intestinal motility in older children. After oral administration, the suspension passes through the small intestine in children for 1-2 hours, which makes it possible to study the structure and motor function of the small intestine for a short time and, thus, to abandon special methods of its investigation. The duration of the passage of the suspension along the large intestine is 4 hours, which significantly reduces the time of examination of the intestine and reduces the radiation load by 2 times.

Application in elderly patients

When examining the elderly, the suspension of Bar-VIPS should be used with extreme caution because of the risk of aspiration.

special instructions

Use with caution in patients with severe general condition.

When making a suspension Bar-VIPS always always add the powder to water and shake before use.

Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and manage mechanisms

The drug Bar-VIPS does not affect the ability to drive vehicles and engage in other potentially hazardous activities that require increased concentration and speed of psychomotor reactions.

Drug Interactions

Significant drug interaction with the use of a suspension of Bar-VIPS together with other drugs is not described.

Response by a radiologist

For carrying out an x-ray study of the stomach and intestines with contrast, we often use the drug Bar-VIPS, but only in adult patients.For children we use other radiopaque means. Pictures with contrast Bar-VIPSom obtained good quality. Suspension from the powder is prepared very easily, by mixing it with water. Patients without difficulty drink a suspension, nausea and vomiting they have not been observed even once. There were no adverse reactions to this drug in my practice, either.
