Guttalax - laxative drug.The active substance - sodium picosulphate - is a laxative triarylmethane group.
As a local laxative, sodium picosulfate after bacterial cleavage in the large intestine has a stimulating effect on the mucosa of the colon, increasing peristalsis, contributing to the accumulation of water and electrolytes in the large intestine. This leads to stimulation of the act of defecation, a decrease in the time of evacuation and softening of the stool.
Composition
Sodium picosulphate monohydrate + auxiliary substances.
Pharmacokinetics
After oral administration, Guttalax enters the large intestine. Absorption of the drug is negligible, which excludes its enterohepatic circulation. In the colon, sodium picosulphate is split into an active metabolite. The time of development of the laxative effect of the drug is determined by the release rate of the active metabolite and is 6-12 hours. An insignificant part of the drug enters the systemic bloodstream.
The relationship between the laxative effect of the active metabolite and its concentration in serum is absent.
Indications
As a laxative in the following cases:
- constipation due to atony and hypotonia of the colon (including in old age, in bedridden patients, after surgery, after childbirth and during lactation);
- constipation caused by medication;

- diseases of the gallbladder, irritable bowel syndrome with a predominance of constipation;

special instructions
It is not recommended to take the drug daily without consulting a doctor for more than 10 days. Long-term use of the drug in high doses can lead to dehydration, disruption of electrolyte balance, hypokalemia.
In folk medicine there is an opinion about the advisability of taking Guttalax as a means of losing weight. This appointment is not justified, since the effect will be short-lived (while this drug is being taken).
Dizziness and fainting were observed in patients taking Guttalax. The analysis showed that these cases are associated with fainting during defecation (or a syncope caused by stress during defecation) or with a vasovaginal response to abdominal pain that may be caused by constipation and is not necessarily associated with taking the drug.
In 1 ml drops contains 450 mg of sorbitol. The maximum recommended daily dose for treatment of adults and children 4-10 years old contains 600 mg and 300 mg of sorbitol, respectively.
The drug does not have taste, so children can add it to food. Children should take the drug only as directed by the doctor.
Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and manage mechanisms
Special clinical studies of the effect of the drug on the ability to control the car and mechanisms were not carried out. Despite this, patients should be informed that they have a vasovagal reaction (i.e.during a spasm of the intestine) dizziness and / or fainting may occur. If patients develop a spasm of the intestine, they should avoid potentially dangerous activities, incl. driving vehicles or controlling machinery.
Drug Interactions
With the simultaneous use of Guttalax in high doses and diuretics or glucocorticosteroids (GCS), the risk of developing electrolyte disorders (hypokalemia) is increased.
Simultaneous administration of antibiotics can reduce the laxative effect of Guttalax.
Violation of electrolyte balance can increase sensitivity to cardiac glycosides.
