Metrowagin antiprotozoal drug.It is believed that the mechanism of action is associated with a violation of the structure of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) of sensitive microorganisms. Metronidazole (the active substance of the drug Metrovagin) is active against Trichomonas vaginalis (Trichomonas), Gardnerella vaginalis, Giardia lamblia, Entamoeba histolytica, and obligate anaerobic bacteria (including Bacteroides spp., Fusobacterium spp.). Metronidazole is resistant to aerobic microorganisms. In combination with Amoxicillin it shows activity against Helicobacter pylori (Helicobacter pylori). It is believed that amoxicillin inhibits the development of Helicobacter pylori resistance to metronidazole.

When treatment is recommended to abstain from sexual intercourse. With vaginitis caused by Trichomonas vaginalis, simultaneous treatment of the sexual partner with the drug metronidazole for oral administration is recommended.

In the case of using the drug in conjunction with metronidazole for oral administration, especially in the second course, control of the picture of peripheral blood (danger of leukopenia) is necessary.

During the period of treatment, ethanol (alcohol) is contraindicated, since a disulfiram-like reaction is possible (spasmodic pains in the abdomen, nausea, vomiting, headache, sudden rush of blood to the face).

Impact on the ability to drive vehicles and manage mechanisms

It is necessary to pay attention of patients, especially drivers of vehicles and persons operating other mechanisms, to the possibility of dizziness associated with taking the drug.

Compatible with sulfonamides and antibiotics. In the treatment of metruvagine, alcohol intake should be avoided (similarly Disulfiram causes alcohol intolerance). Do not combine metronidazole with disulfiram, since the interaction of these drugs may inhibit consciousness, the development of mental disorders.

When used simultaneously with Warfarin and other indirect anticoagulants, metronidazole enhances their effect. It is not recommended to combine with nondepolarizing muscle relaxants (vecuronium bromide).

Under the influence of barbiturates, the effect of metronidazole may decrease, since its inactivation in the liver is accelerated.

Cimetidine depresses the metabolism of metronidazole, which can lead to an increase in its concentration in the blood serum and an increased risk of developing adverse reactions.

With simultaneous administration with lithium preparations, the concentration of the latter in plasma can increase.

Response of a gynecologist

A good tool for treating women with vaginitis and vulvovaginitis of various etiologies. Especially effective are metrovagin suppositories in the treatment of trichomonatal colpitis (vaginitis). Approximately on the 5th-6th day, discharge from the vagina disappears, the women cease to disturb the itching of the genital organs. Do not always agree to be treated by sexual partners, which provokes a relapse of the disease. It should be noted that adverse reactions to treatment with metrogonavine vaginal suppositories are extremely rare. There were cases when women complained of burning and pain in the vagina. But after the treatment, all these symptoms disappeared.
